A few days ago, someone messaged me, asking what are my favourite brands.
Please note that being in the list does not mean I necessarily buy from these brands but I admire their things.
Here is the list, not in any order of preference.
A.P.C. – leather goods and jackets. Timeless style.
ASPESI – shirts and jackets.
Golden Goose – cool sneakers.
Hilditch & Key – the best for business/work shirts.
Christian Dior – leather goods, coats and jackets especially under Heidi Slimane. New designer coming in next season. We’ll see.
St Laurent – not since Heidi Slimane left. Now lost direction. No oomph.
Uniqlo – but not last two seasons. They used to make well cut linen jackets and I loved their cashmere sweaters. Still makes the best jeans for me though and I have like 20-30 of their 100% cotton shirts.
Adidas – sneakers only. The classic ones.
Brioni – although their styling seems to be rather lost right now, their fabrics and workmanship are still one of the very best in RTW.
Berluti- too expensive and also seems to have lost some direction.
Lanvin – only the sneakers and shirts but also lost direction since Elbaz left.
Sutor Mantellassi – classic shoes with superb workmanship. Only two stores in the whole world, Florence & Milan.
Fredi Pisano – suits made from their own textile mills, great fitting and much, much cheaper than Brioni. Two stores only in the world, Rome & New York.
Massimo Duti – good jackets with affordable prices. Forget the rest.
Brunello Cucinelli – great stylish luxury sportswear and jackets.
Maison Kitsune – cute stuff, not crazy price points.
The Kooples – cool casual shirts and jackets.
Muji – their all cotton pyjamas are the best in terms of price and feel.
Brands to look out or not look out for:
Loewe – JW Andersen is doing interesting things.
Moreau – maybe the next Goyard. We’ll see.
Prada seems to be churning out rubbish lately.
Louis Vuitton – only buy the luggage. The rest of their things, let the PRCs buy the whole lot.
Givenchy & Balenciaga – only if you a rap star but if you have the attitude, go for it!
Gucci – forget it now, too commercial but a few of their classics-inspired shoes are good.
Celine – Introducing menswear by Heidi Slimane this FW18. Much anticipated by the fashion world as he is very influential in setting trends that impact brands like Zara etc.
